4 Impermanent Artists and a Lesson Idea

Impermanent Art = Making Art with Objects at Home

The focus of this post is to share with you a lesson I began while teaching virtually and without the use of any special or specific art supplies.

Here are a few questions to consider while teaching the lesson to your students,

  • What is Impermanent Art?  The art vocabulary term "Impermanent Art" is used to describe a work of art that only occurs once.  Or that lasts a short period of time; not permanent.  For example, a painting you create using a canvas and acrylics might last forever or a long period of time.  While a sculpture made out of rocks found in your porch will only last for a few days or weeks.
  • What objects are used to create Impermanent Art?  Stones, fallen leaves, sticks, toys, paper, pens, food (make sure you will eat it afterwards), paper rolls, cards, etc.
  • Important fact! To record or document that an ephemeral / impermanent work of art occurred or was created, artists photograph their work.

Jessica M.  Impermanent Art inspired by Starry Night using found leaves, rocks, popcorn, and  recycled paper.

Look at these Artists for Inspiration:

David Zinn creates "Dream Chalk Creatures" in a sidewalks..  He used the popping grass to his advantage as part of the hair of the creatures.  How is this impermanent?  The drawings you see are impermanent, once rain comes they will be erased for ever.

James Brunt also creates impermanent art by using objects found in nature such as rocks, leaves and sticks.  He usually arranges his work in the form of a spiral or mandala.

🌈

Mitchel Wu arranges toys and objects to create an action scene, then photographs them.  He uses special computer software to add effects.

🌈

Instagram famous artist, PaperBoyo uses paper to create cutouts and then positions them in a landscape or famous location and snaps a photo with his smartphone.

🌈

The amazing thing about Impermanent Art is that it is limitless.  You can be outdoors using nature as inspiration or be in the kitchen to create food art and eat it afterwards, or have that student who adores make up create a photo shoot session creating make up art.
